Since 2007, Harvard faculty and students have been engaged in research on Harvard's connections to the institution of slavery.
In 2019, looking to build on that research, Harvard President Larry Bacow established the Presidential Initiative on Harvard's Legacy of Slavery.
And in late April of 2022, the Legacy of Slavery Initiative is set to release an inaugural report on its findings; the report will also likely explore modest forms of reparative justice.
However, due to the temporal limitations of the Legacy of Slavery Initiative's scope, much of Harvard's legacy of racism and racial exploitation remains unexplored.
Alternatively, my senior thesis—Magis Amica Veritas: An Examination of Harvard through the Lens of Racial Capitalism—broadens the scope through which one may view Harvard's history of racial injustices and attempts to fill in some of the gaps in the Legacy of Slavery Initiative.
While excavating Harvard's connections (physical, economic, pedagogical, etc.) to slavery remains central to my work, I also examine how contemporary Harvard has continued to profit off racial extraction. (Nevertheless, there is still so much more to uncover!)
Ultimately, I believe that any historical inquiry that fails to address Harvard's post-1865 racial injustices will fail to recognize (and recommend) proportionate reparative solutions.
Yet, the truth is Harvard owes major reparations.
